Ministry for Digital Transformation Visits Wooptix
La Laguna (Tenerife), January 9, 2025 – The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Service, Óscar López, announced in the Canary Islands that SETT (Spanish Society for Technological Transformation) will invest in the Spanish company WOOPTIX, with an initial public co-investment of 4 million euros. This commitment to semiconductor manufacturing equipment aims to enhance Spain’s chip production capabilities and accelerate its reindustrialization and technological sovereignty.
López made the announcement from the company’s own facilities. Wooptix, which originated as a spin-off from the University of La Laguna in the Canary Islands, is a pioneering and unique company in Spain specializing in semiconductor metrology—an essential technique for controlling the production process of wafers, which increasingly house smaller chips and require more efficient measurement systems.
With this investment in Wooptix, the Government aims to achieve a competitive global advantage. Wooptix has patented a unique system for wafer measurement and processing, essential for optimizing semiconductor manufacturing processes. Factories using Wooptix’s technology can measure wafers by acquiring over 16 million data points with sub-nanometric height resolution. This allows for more precise and faster calibration of silicon wafer topography, a critical aspect of semiconductor production.

This investment was recently approved by the Governing Board of SETT, a public business entity under the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service. SETT will co-invest more than 4 million euros in Wooptix’s solutions, alongside other strategic international players, bringing the total capital influx into the company to over 10 million euros.
The Minister celebrated Wooptix as a “success story,” citing its role in strengthening research, knowledge transfer from university to industry, and Spain’s shift toward technological reindustrialization, while also ensuring balanced regional investment in future economic sectors.
In this regard, Óscar López emphasized that “this project offers the opportunity to integrate significant industrial capabilities into Spain’s semiconductor ecosystems. It is particularly important for the Canary Islands, as it strengthens the region’s technological sector and generates high-value employment in an advanced and strategic industry.”
About Wooptix
Wooptix is a leader in optical metrology through wavefront phase, a technique coming from adaptive optics in astronomy. Since the early 2000s, Wooptix has being improving and optimizing the proprietary algorithms running on the WFPI technique (WaveFront Phase Imaging), thanks to the brilliant team.
The company has developed SEBI® RT1000, a wavefront phase camera that introduces exceptionally high phase sampling (1.000 x 1.000), a real time processing (30 FPS), and an absolute Wavefront Accuracy (λ/30 RMS) for the most challenging measurement tasks. Wooptix is headquartered in Tenerife, Madrid (Spain), and San Francisco (USA).
